Garage Door Safety For You and Your Kids
Summertime brings a great deal of freedom that may be lacking throughout the year -- especially for kids who are looking forward to long days of fun in the sun, playing water games and riding bikes. Not only is all this outdoor playtime good for their health, but it also offers parents a small break! Make sure your kids stay safe this summer by having the proper maintenance completed on your garage door to limit the risk of what could be a serious injury.
Spring and Summer Check Up
While it is helpful to do a visual check of your garage doors every month or so, coming into spring and summer months is a good time to do a more thorough review and look for maintenance needs. A visual check is something you can do yourself, and could include the following items:
- Check door springs and hardware, looking specifically for strain or breaks in hardware, bearings or oil door rollers.
- Add a light oil or silicone lubricant to keep gears moving smoothly.
- Check your photo eyes (the black sensors) on your door to ensure they're stopping the door from closing as expected.
- Place an object thicker than two inches on the ground in the path of your garage door and attempt to close it. If the door doesn't automatically reverse when it hits the obstruction, you should call your preferred repair dealer.
Another quick check is the balance check; close your garage door or doors, release the emergency-release cord, and then move the door up to around three feet off of the ground. If the door stays balanced, that's great! You're in good shape. However, if you see a shift in the door of three inches or more either up or down, then you've got a balance problem and should contact your dealer immediately.
While these checks are quick and easy, nothing can replace the benefit of having new technology. If your garage door was installed before 1993, there's a high possibility that it doesn't have the auto-reverse feature that is standard in newer door mechanisms. There are several ways that garage doors help keep your family secure. Openers with a rolling-code technology help prevent theft by making it more difficult for someone to use another opener on your garage. Be sure to protect your garage door opener just as you would a key to your home, too.
